Contract Staffing
Contract staffing: vetted W-2, 1099 and corp-to-corp talent on your terms.
Contract staffing places a vetted W-2, 1099 or corp-to-corp professional on your team for a defined period, with ApTask as the employer or contracting party and you directing the work. You get a shortlist of three to five candidates within 48 hours, one master services agreement for every engagement model, and a two-week no-fee replacement window.

What is contract staffing?
Contract staffing places a worker with a client for a defined period or project while the staffing firm employs or contracts with the worker and bills the client by the hour. When the contract ends there is no obligation to hire.
ApTask delivers contract, contract-to-hire and direct hire talent from one authenticated network under a single SLA, so the engagement type never forces a vendor change. Strategic Workforce Staffing is the umbrella agreement all three run under.
Most senior contractors prefer W-2 on our payroll with full benefits; 1099 and corp-to-corp are available where the role and worker structure support them. The glossary defines each term.

When should you use contract staffing instead of direct hire?
Choose contract when the need ends on a date: surge capacity, a project phase, a specialist skill needed for a bounded piece of work, or a backfill for leave. Choose direct hire when the seat is clearly permanent and you want the person on your own payroll from day one.
Not sure yet? Contract-to-hire lets you evaluate the person on the job first; the conversion fee steps down the longer they have worked with you. The guide contract vs contract-to-hire vs direct hire walks through the trade-offs without the sales pitch.
- Need ends on a date → contract.
- Need is likely permanent, fit is uncertain → contract-to-hire.
- Need is permanent and the profile is clear → direct hire.
- You already found the person and just need compliant payroll → payrolling or pass-through.
How is contract staffing priced?
Contract roles are billed as a fully-loaded hourly bill rate, and ApTask publishes the underlying margin. The bill rate is what you pay per hour; the pay rate is what the contractor earns, and the difference covers employer burden and our margin, so there is no separate placement fee.
Pricing is walked through in the discovery call and locked in the requisition together with the engagement model, rate card and SLA, so you see one invoice per period rather than three. For the mechanics of bill rate, pay rate and markup, read how staffing agencies make money or the glossary entries for bill rate and burden.
Whether a contractor is W-2, 1099 or corp-to-corp is a worker-classification question, not a preference: at the federal level the IRS applies its common-law control test (IRS: independent contractor or employee? (external source)), and state rules such as California’s AB 5 can apply as well.
Who employs a contract worker, and what is included?
For W-2 contractors ApTask is the employer: payroll, employer taxes, benefits, equipment, NDA and onboarding are handled inside our platform. 1099 and corp-to-corp contractors are engaged through their own entity where the role and worker structure support it.
Every candidate clears identity verification, employment-history reconciliation, technical proof-of-work and reference checks before a resume reaches you. We also hold a continuity reserve: if a contractor leaves unexpectedly, a replacement candidate is identified within 48 hours.
Already found the contractor yourself? Pass-Through Services payrolls them compliantly under a flat margin, and Payroll Solutions covers hiring where you have no legal entity.

How do contract, contract-to-hire and direct hire compare?
| Model | Who employs the worker | How you pay | Shortlist SLA | If it does not work out |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contract | ApTask (W-2) or the worker’s own entity (1099, C2C) | Hourly bill rate; margin published | 3–5 candidates in 48 hours | Two-week no-fee replacement window |
| Contract-to-hire | ApTask during the evaluation period; you after conversion | Hourly bill rate, then a conversion fee that steps down to zero after six months | 3–5 candidates in 48 hours (starts as a contract) | Release at any point in the evaluation period, no permanent commitment |
| Direct hire | You, from day one | Single recruitment fee, a percentage of base salary | 3–5 candidates in 5 business days | 90-day no-fee replacement guarantee |
SLAs and guarantees as stated on Strategic Workforce Staffing, the master agreement all three models run under.
How it works
How does contract staffing work at ApTask?
- 01
Intake
Send the role, timeline and the constraint that matters most: budget, clearance, geography or stack. A vertical recruiter responds within 24 hours.
- 02
Engagement-model calibration
We confirm contract is the right model for the seat, or recommend contract-to-hire or direct hire instead. The recommendation is on the record before any candidate is presented.
- 03
Authenticated sourcing
Identity verification, employment-history reconciliation, technical proof-of-work and reference checks. Every candidate clears the same pipeline regardless of engagement model.
- 04
Shortlist in 48 hours
Three to five candidates inside the SLA window, each with a scorecard, so the decision is built on evidence rather than enthusiasm.
- 05
Onboarding and continuity
Equipment, NDA, payroll and benefits onboarding handled inside our platform. A continuity reserve identifies a replacement within 48 hours of an unexpected exit, and the first two weeks carry a no-fee replacement window.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between contract staffing and contract-to-hire?
A contract role ends on a fixed timeline with no obligation to hire. Contract-to-hire lets you evaluate the person on the job first, then convert to a direct hire; the conversion fee steps down the longer they have worked with you and reaches zero after six months.
Do you support W-2, 1099 and C2C contractors?
All three. Most senior contractors prefer W-2 on our payroll with full benefits, and 1099 or corp-to-corp are available where the role and worker structure support them.
How fast can ApTask fill a contract role?
The SLA is a shortlist of three to five candidates within 48 hours. Median first submission is 24 to 48 hours after intake, and clients with a pre-built calibrated bench often see shortlists in 8 to 12 hours.
What happens if a contractor leaves mid-engagement?
We hold a continuity reserve, so a replacement candidate is identified within 48 hours of an unexpected exit. Contract engagements also carry a two-week no-fee replacement window at the start.
Can a contractor convert to a direct hire?
Yes. The conversion fee steps down the longer the contractor has worked with you and reaches zero after six months of continuous engagement. Conversion timing is your call.
Is contract staffing the same as IT staff augmentation?
Staff augmentation is contract staffing applied to technology teams: engineers join your team under your management and roadmap and bill their time. A statement of work (SOW) is the alternative that bills outcomes instead of time.
